Vancouver company’s software used to report results
VANCOUVER, CANADA, October 24, 2007 — After a worldwide effort to make the seven continent Live Earth event the greenest ever, the carbon footprint results are in -- thanks to Vancouver-based Visible Strategies, which allowed Live Earth organizers to compile the data into a compelling online format using the innovative sustainability planning tool called see-it™.
Visible Strategies is the only Canadian partner of Live Earth and the interactive see-it™ site is expected to be viewed by millions of visitors via Live Earth’s website. Online visitors can click on graphic representations of the eight participating cities — Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, London, Johannesburg, Rio Janeiro and New York — where scorecards detail the environmental performance at each city.

Using see-it™, each city’s event results can be easily compared against other cities in terms of the amount of carbon used and the amount of waste generated during the event. Benchmark data includes carbon consumption of each venue in the areas of energy, transportation and waste.
In a statement announcing the event, Noble Prize winner, Al Gore said, “Live Earth is officially the largest global entertainment event in history… and the numbers are still coming in.”
SOS and Live Earth founder Kevin Wall stated: “Our climate crisis is the biggest challenge facing humanity… SOS will give the world the tools we need to answer that call with meaningful action.”
Key Live Earth findings:
-
Shanghai had the lowest total carbon usage followed by Johannesburg and Tokyo
-
London had the highest carbon usage followed by New York and Australia
-
Attendee transit to venues was the largest contributor to carbon usage
-
Artist transit to distant locations such as Sidney resulted in significantly higher carbon usage
-
Tokyo and Johannesburg diverted over 95% of their waste from entering their landfills through efficient recycling and reuse programs
“This is the first time in history that an organization has worked so diligently to reduce the environmental impact of a major live event,” said Colin Grant, founder and CEO of Visible Strategies.
“It is also the first time an organization has been so transparent in reporting its results to the world. Usually this volume and type of data is difficult to present and even more difficult for the public to understand. Using see-it™, Live Earth is able to communicate its environmental impact data in way that anyone can understand.”
Joshua Stempel of Live Earth Green said that the findings will help implement a new sustainable model for future events going forward. “Visible Strategies was instrumental in helping us report to the world on the carbon usage of this landmark event. Reporting complex environmental data is always a challenge and we are delighted that see-it™ presents the results in a concise and meaningful way. We expect the pioneering work done by Live Earth and Visible Strategies to track this event’s environmental performance will serve as a template for other large live events such as the Olympics, World Cup and other large concerts and tours to use as they plan, monitor and report the carbon footprint of their events.”
Dr. Boyd Cohen, president of Visible Strategies and an expert in sustainability explained that there is a lot to be learned from the Live Earth data. “In terms of reducing the environmental impact of large events, adequate pre-event planning is critical to ensuring high environmental standards are maintained,” said Cohen. “For example, selecting population dense cities that have exceptional public transportation and easy-to-access music venues is key because attendees will be able to walk or take transit rather than commute in a non-green way by car or airplane.”
Dr. Cohen added, “The findings also reveal that Live Earth organizers should encourage entertainers to further minimize the impact of their own travel. This can be done by traveling together or encouraging artists to performance in locations where the distance of travel is minimal. If an artist like Madonna is already in London, organizers can reduce travel emissions by arranging for her perform in London rather than traveling to New York.
In the waste reduction category, Tokyo and Johannesburg performed the best, diverting over 95% of the waste generated during the live event from their landfills through efficient recycling and reuse programs.
“Large events and even cities can learn a lot from these cities in terms of how they diverted waste,” said Dr. Cohen.
